Opis

International Relations, Global Edition

Build a foundation for international relations
International Relations
enables students to form a framework for analyzing the complex and constantly changing information that comprises our increasingly interconnected world. Opening students’ eyes to the positive and negative events that occur across the globe every day, authors Jon Pevehouse and Joshua Goldstein offer a strong foundation in current global affairs, with insight into topics like foreign assistance in the developing world, the changing nature of war, and global poverty levels. The 12th Edition offers significant new and revised content — on the North Korean nuclear crisis, the 2016 U.S. election results, and more — to give students an up-to-date view of international relations.

Features

Updated content and engaging features paint a vivid picture of international relations

  • International Relations has been revised and updated to keep the text current in a time of extensive changes and uncertainties in the international system. Highlights include the following:
    • Updated - Contemporary topics throughout the text have been refreshed to reflect the current state of international relations. Examples include:
      • Great Britain’s planned exit from the European Union
      • the 2016 U.S. presidential election
      • Middle East conflicts, including those in Syria, Libya, Yemen, and the resulting refugee crises arising from those conflicts
      • the North Korean nuclear crisis
      • the U.S.-China trade war
      • the Paris climate treaty and U.S. withdrawal from the treaty by the Trump administration
      • the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
    • Updated - Tables and figures have been updated with the most recent available data. This includes new data on gross domestic product (GDP), military forces, migration and refugees, debt, remittances, foreign aid, the HIV/AIDS epidemic, UN peacekeeping operations, and more.
    • Updated - A revised photo program with dozens of new photos — many from 2017–2018 — draws attention to current events while reinforcing key concepts in the book. Photo captions reinforce main themes from each section and link them with the scenes pictured.
    • New - In the 12th Edition, the authors emphasize the theme of backlash against globalization and the institutions that have supported its advance. This backlash has resulted in Great Britain’s decision to exit from the European Union, the election of an American president challenging the global order, and growing populism and nationalism around the world.

Additional features support focused critical thinking

  • Seeking the Collective Good boxes discuss a collective good and the problems encountered by states in attempting to achieve cooperation to provide the good. In each example, we highlight how one or more of the core principles (dominance, reciprocity, and identity) have been used successfully (or unsuccessfully) in the provision of the good.
  • New - Public Opinion and International Relations features discuss the status of public opinion, within the U.S. or other countries from around the world, on major international relations issues. The growing availability of reliable public opinion polling data from around the world gives students and instructors the opportunity to discover more about how people view international relations topics.
  • Policy Perspectives boxes prompt students to take the perspective of a national leader facing a real-world crisis and to develop a policy response. These features help students bridge theory and policy and better understand the connection between domestic and foreign policymaking.
  • Let’s Debate the Issue boxes give students a forum to think through controversial topics, reinforcing the general themes of each chapter.
  • Updated - Careers in International Relations features helps students think about careers in nongovernmental organizations, international law, government and diplomacy, international business, and teaching and research. Formerly located in the appendix, these features have now been integrated into relevant chapters in the 12th Edition.
